SOCIAL CONTRACT: A BIASED SYSTEM
Recently there has been a lot of talk on the rights of people of color and more so in my part of the world the rights of women and children against any form of abuse. It then took me to my first or second year political science doctrines that included a term coined as Social Contract which by my thought should be revisited. Especially because the problem of rights of men of color and women have not received the utmost attention that lead to notable change from governments around the world.
A few social media campaigns and a few days of demonstrations have done little to change the trajectory of the broader societal actions. Black lives matter has appeared over the years in the US and even with large numbers it has been difficult to instill lasting change. Bringing it closer to home ‘’Eseng mo ngwaneng’’ slogan adopted by the government of Botswana was a short social media ‘stint’ designed to carry a message ‘Stay away from Kids’ or the constant have you found: name(a girl child, a woman or just a kid) almost everyday in South Africa social media asks for help in finding such persons and more often they end up not being found or just found raped and killed. Social contract by definition is an agreement between the government and governed stating the rights and limitations of those rights, the promise to safeguard life, property and in return to obey the rules laid out by the government.
The theory is not perfect but lays out the basics, that the government will protect each and every individual including a black person, women and children. In return the government shall enjoy a monopoly of power to dictate taxes and laws to the betterment of both the governed and government. What then happens when it barely registers when a pregnant woman is found dead hanging from a tree or children denied the right to simply be a child raping and impregnating them. More yet the unjustifiable denying life to a man or woman of color for crimes not committed or exercisive force like placing a knee on someones neck until they are dead even though that person has screamed out they cant breath, a murder should be called and treated as such. Where then does the contract apply because the governments will quickly remind you of our accord, should you step out of line or voice out your opinions in a manner not agreeable with them.
It should be noted that the majority of leadership positions in different countries are manned by a man or white men, all doing nothing to realize the universal declaration that all human beings are born free and equal and the right of man shall be held universal. There can not be any justification to the injustices felt by people of color or women and children at the hands of us men. Instead of telling people what to wear and where to walk at what time perhaps we should stop killing and raping them, there is no strength in that. Should your rights be denied only then will you accept black, women 's rights matter? The biased system of justice cannot find a place in today's world, privilege must be acknowledged and systematic change has to be felt by all and it all begins with the Man at the top and the man within.
A lot still needs to be said, we are just beginning and remember ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’’.
